Employment and Recruitment

As a City, we know that every day a business isn’t moving forward it's moving backwards. And we know that we need to be able to provide your business with a workforce that will not only move forward with you, but bring with them the new skills and talents you will need. Education, training and development is something that Portsmouth prides itself on- providing a highly skilled and sustainable labour pool.

All of the establishments listed below have Business/Employer Liaison staff and facilities to ensure that the curriculum and training delivered is not only accessible to all type of employed individuals, but is of the right quality and standard needed for your business.

Helping residents prepare for work, as well as find work, is a key priority for Portsmouth. Portsmouth prides itself on its relentless dedication towards new initiatives and collaborations aimed at raising not only the skill level, but the aspiration level of all Portsmouth residents. Some key recruitment agencies have their home in Portsmouth for this reason alone. The fact that we have a working population size that's 4% higher than the UK average, and a higher than UK average education level too (Level 3 equivalent) also helps! The Portsmouth residents will not only provide a great candidate pool for your workforce now, but also for future workforce growth.

The Jobcentre Plus in Portsmouth is a key establishment in the City when it comes to employment and recruitment. On top of offering its expected job seeker assistance service, the Jobcentre Plus also works tirelessly with a range of partners within the City to help develop and manage key strategies and initiatives within the City to support Portsmouth residents to get into employment. The Jobcentre has supported many projects with Portsmouth City Council, local charities, colleges and training providers and construction developments within the City, and supports a wide range of events to provide further skills training access to residents.

Solent Jobs Programme

  •

  • At the moment, Portsmouth City Council is supporting an employment programme called the Solent Jobs Programme. The Solent Jobs Programme (SJP) is a two year employment programme funded by Southampton and Portsmouth City Deal and the European Social Fund. We want to work in partnership with local businesses who can provide work placements for local people who are currently out of work in Southampton, Portsmouth, Havant, Gosport and the Isle of Wight. The placements are cost free to the business and the candidate will be paid the living wage for up to 25 hours a week by the programme. Potential candidates will have been out of work for a period of time, aged over 18 years old, keen to get back into work and assessed as being able to take part in work related activity. This programme is all about engaging with the local community, and helping to reduce unemployment in the local area whilst creating a positive business image with employees and your customers. Please download the PDF for further information.
