Government has named the 'Digital and Creative Industries' as one of six priority growth sectors. The creative economy and creative industries are certainly an important contributor to the Solent regional economy. Creative industries form an exciting and dynamic sector in Portsmouth, comprising artists, photographers, musicians, design agencies, writers, videogame developers and much more. The recent Creative Census is available here. The report found that 'Creative individuals and businesses are thriving in Portsmouth'. The city is home to a diverse range of creative artists and industries, including designers, videogame developers and musicians. Recently, 13 new artists' studios have opened in the city's Hotwalls development, in the heart of Old Portsmouth.

With significant changes in the number of creative and digital businesses over 2010-2016 in Hampshire, most sectors in Portsmouth have seen a positive increase. Advertising and marketing, design and publishing are showing a greater growth across the local authority than across England.Employment within the creative and digital sectors within Portsmouth also shows a 33% increase from 2010 -2016, again above the national growth for this period.

A flourishing music scene includes Victorious Festival, which attracts over 100,000 visitors for a weekend of live music on Southsea Common, Mutiny Festival, and a number independent music venues and events throughout the city.

The University of Portsmouth has a Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries with staff and students skilled in a wide range of areas including graphic design, illustration, creative writing, fashion & textiles, digital media, animation, anterior design and architecture. There is also a successful film and TV production course, with the University running its own studio and TV channel. And a MSc in Computer Games Technology, providing students with advanced skills and experience in computer game development to work within the industry. The University was the winner of TIGA (The Independent Games Association) Best Educational Institution Award 2014.
