Portsmouth is a national hub for the defence industry and home to world-leading companies with significant engineering expertise across a wide range of satellite, aerospace and security assignments.
There is an extensive local support network, with key players such as BAE and Rolls Royce, who provide support services to the Royal Navy and Ministry of Defence. The University of Portsmouth's Aerospace Materials research group specialises in applied research into fatigue and fracture of aerospace materials and components, with industrial collaborators including Rolls Royce, the US Air Force, the MoD, QinetiQ, Airbus and Westland Aerostructures.
The UK's aerospace and defence industry is the largest in Europe with more than 17% of global market share. In Hampshire, it represents a high-growth sector with a concentration of employment that is double the national average, an outstanding cluster of world-class companies and some of the best research and development facilities globally.
Seven of the top ten global aerospace companies have a presence in the Solent sub-region, with 500 aerospace businesses and 93,000 aerospace and defence specialists located in Hampshire. Farnborough Airport, home to the largest aviation trade show, is approximately an hour's drive away, along with three international airports, London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Southampton.
The Solent Enterprise Zone at Daedalus focuses on advanced manufacturing, specialising in the aerospace and aviation sectors and offers many benefits to businesses.
The north east of the city is home to a number of world-leading companies, including Airbus Defence and Space, the leading space company in Europe, where 1400 staff are involved in the development of the UK's space capabilities and the design, build and test of payloads for communications satellites and space-borne radars. Portsmouth Aviation is a multi-service manufacturing and engineering company providing a comprehensive mechanical and aerospace engineering design service. H&S Aviation, part of BBA Aviation, is a world leader in engine repair and maintenance. GKN Aerospace is one of the world's largest independent first tier suppliers to the global aviation industry, supplying a range of products for aerospace, military and commercial applications.
QinetiQ - Latest News
The MOD and QinetiQ have agreed to invest approximately £180m in modernising facilities, equipment and developing new ways of working as part of QinetiQ’s wider strategy to lead and modernise T&E across the lifecycle, from experimentation and research of new capabilities through to training and rehearsal of current capabilities. This new approach will be delivered by working in collaboration across the defence enterprise, including Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs), to foster innovation and develop future skills, with the QinetiQ investment being recovered from the MOD over the life of the contract
